It's a Sea Change

MacKenzie Supports the Launch of the World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Commercial Ferry

SF Bay Ferry’s launch of the MV Sea Change marks a significant milestone in maritime transportation as the world’s first entirely hydrogen-powered commercial ferry. This innovative vessel is owned by Switch Maritime and was funded with support from a grant provided by the California Air Resources Board.

Sea Change has embarked on a six-month pilot period, offering free rides along the San Francisco waterfront. With support from the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District and United Airlines, Sea Change is operated by SF Bay Ferry and its contract operator, Blue & Gold Fleet. The new vessel is a key part of SF Bay Ferry’s broader efforts to phase out diesel-powered ferries and reduce carbon emissions, charting the course for a more sustainable future.

Our MacKenzie team was honored to support SF Bay Ferry by developing the visual identity for the Sea Change pilot, as well as providing event production for the launch ceremony, which brought together stakeholders, civic officials and the public. We also garnered awareness through a robust media outreach effort, resulting in more than 200 mentions and an audience reach of 1.3 billion, including coverage from the Associated PressPoliticoFast Company, and NBC Bay Area.

Sea Change stands as a symbol of progress and innovation, and reflects the innovative spirit of the Bay Area. We’re proud to have played a role in supporting this groundbreaking initiative, with its positive impact on the future of the maritime industry.
